Interpretation of the drawing of hexagram 1 of the Yi Jing

The opposite hexagram of Hexagram 1 is obtained by replacing the Yang line with a Yin line and vice versa, to become Hexagram 2.

Opposite hexagram (錯卦 Cuo Gua): The opposite hexagram indicates everything that is not or the opposite of the solution to the situation.

The opposite hexagram is obtained by replacing the Yang lines with Yin lines. The six Yang lines of the Heaven hexagram (1) become Yin, and the resulting hexagram is Earth: Hexagram 2 – the Receptive.

The inverted hexagram of Hexagram 1 is obtained by permuting the two trigrams, to become Hexagram 2.

Inverted Hexagram (覆卦 Fu Gua): The inverted hexagram provides information on the origin of the situation.

The permuted hexagram is obtained by swapping the two Qian trigrams. Since the two trigrams are identical, the permuted hexagram is a reflection of itself.

The nuclear hexagram is obtained by using the four lines in the center to form two trigrams. The nuclear hexagram of Hexagram 1 is Hexagram 1.

Nuclear (Mutual) Hexagram (互卦 Hu Gua): The nuclear hexagram represents the core of the problem or question.

The nuclear hexagram is obtained by using the four central lines to form two trigrams. In this case, hexagram 1 is itself the nuclear hexagram.

Mutant Hexagram (derived): The mutation of a line results in a new hexagram, which indicates the evolution of the situation.

  • Line 6 mutates: the resulting hexagram is H43.
  • Line 5 mutates: the resulting hexagram is H14.
  • Line 4 mutates: the resulting hexagram is H9.
  • Line 3 mutates: the resulting hexagram is H10.
  • Line 2 mutates: the resulting hexagram is H13.
  • Line 1 mutates: the resulting hexagram is H44.
